Hasya Rasa: Embracing Joy and Humor

For me (Nancy), March was always a long and seemingly endless month, especially as a child. I would wait patiently for the cold, dark days of winter to give way to the warmth and radiant sunlight of spring. Even now, living in Key West, the 31 days of March often feel suspended, lingering with a sense of quiet expectancy. As spring approaches and knocks at our doors, it becomes a wonderful opportunity to revel in the essence of Hasya Rasa—the essence of joy and humor.

Joy is, at its core, a heightened condition of inner love. This essence is not limited to particular moments; instead, it accompanies us in all activities, granting us the ability to sustain a positive attitude even in the face of prolonged adversity. The gift of joy provides an enormous capacity for patience, helping us to endure and persevere through challenges.

According to David Hawkins in his book Power vs. Force, joy represents the level of healing. This view highlights the transformative power of joy, positioning it not merely as a fleeting emotion but as a profound force that nurtures resilience and fosters well-being.

Joy and mirth are often expressed through gentle smiles or booming laughter, both of which can be contagious to others. The phrase "laughter is the best medicine" has proven to be true. The scientific community has tested laughter's healing properties in various ways, and studies have shown that laughter has a significant effect on our immune systems. Specifically, laughter decreases the stress hormone cortisol and increases the levels of natural killer cells IgG and IgM, as well as other leukocytes. Other benefits of laughter include a reduction in pain in the body and a state of relaxation in muscles.  Interestingly, studies revealed little difference in healing benefits whether the laughter was spontaneous or induced.

This month as we explore Haysa Rasa, let humor lighten your burdens, allow mirth to inspire hope from within and build connections to others, and laugh often keeping you grounded, focused, and alert. Joyfully melt away your anger as you build patience and compassion. I can hear the laughter and feel the mirth.  Ready, set, JOY!
