ATHA
Atha Yoganussasanam
This is the first sutra from The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. It translates to "now, the instruction of yoga." This month we are going to focus on the concept of “Atha”, the beginning. It implies a freshness, to begin, now.
So much of our yoga practice brings us to focus on being present and “Atha” leads us to that awareness of now, this moment. The mind can be so very challenging as it wants to divert us through the wanderings of our desires, our fears, the ego driving us and our aversions. When unchecked the minds wandering can lead us into dis-ease, a discomfort with our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual bodies. “Atha”, this simple word, can redirect us to NOW.
In yoga philosophy, "Atha" signifies a conscious decision to engage fully with the present moment. It is an invitation to pause and recognize the significance of beginning, no matter where we are in our journey. Each time we choose to start anew, we honor the wisdom of being here, now, and invite transformation through mindful awareness.
Breath in, ATHA. Breath out, ATHA. Transition from one asana to the next, ATHA. Become distracted and then awaken, ATHA.
As we explore the concept of “Atha”, it is helpful to remember that beginnings are always available to us, regardless of our circumstances or experience level. Whether you are stepping onto your yoga mat for the first time or returning after a long break, each breath offers a new opportunity to recommit and reconnect. By gently bringing our awareness back to the present, we cultivate resilience and compassion for ourselves on our journey.
“Atha” invites us to set aside past regrets and future anxieties, allowing us to cultivate a deeper sense of presence on and off the mat. By embracing this moment as a fresh beginning, we are empowered by our willing heart to approach our practice with openness and curiosity. We can then take it from a practice on the mat to a way of life off the mat.
The word "Atha" invites us to be fully present, embracing the opportunity to start anew with each moment. It signals an openness to learning and transformation, reminding us that every journey—whether on or off the mat—begins right here and now.
Choose “ATHA” as your mantra, your word of empowerment, to awaken this month. Use this simple word to encourage you to be open to the adventure of a new beginning, to see things from a fresh perspective, and to drop the restrictions that the mind can create from expectations and comparisons. Here is where we come to know a true sense of power that is born in this moment, free from the haunting of the past and the anxiety of the future.
ATHA!
